The Wrap - What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas

 1. NRL - Las Vegas: Allegiant Stadium. A great stadium which is a bit skinny for wingers to score regularly (centres score regularly in Vegas as a result). So much hype...incredible scenes. A sensational launch time. By all reports (thanks Paddy), a lively party all week!

The Leeds Rhinos absolutely thumped HKR (who beat the Broncos in the World Club Challenge last week). Thank goodness for HKR with the saying " What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Suddenly Willie Peters looks shaky after being touted as the next coach of the Knights/ PNG Chiefs/ Perth Bears/ Hills District Bulls.

(i) Newcastle v Cowboys. Fletcher Sharpe is a top prospect, mullet and all. Quick and confident. Brown looked different and Ponga was excellent. If they can all stay on the field they may avoid the spoon. Todd Payton has a problem. A bad loss and they lack pace and youth. He could be the first coach sacked if he is not careful.

(ii) Bulldogs v St George. Not sure of the speed of the Bulldogs halves in the modern game. Galvin? Never been fitter, young and all that, but he lacks pace and as a result they lack that winning edge. He is getting closer to the line before passing, but... They have Crichton who is getting to the peak of his powers now. However, maybe Burton's time is getting ready to expire. St George look steady, but too many older slower guys...Gutherson, Suli, Cook, Kerr, Holmes, Leilua. Sadly, many of them are cranky, ill disciplined players. Like the young Couchman brothers. Did their dad write Maths textbooks?

A golden point loss is always tough to manage. Saints lost a million games by one and two points last year. A tough result. How was Crichton not binned? He seems to get away with a bit. Referee Atkins had a shocker sadly. That and a few other calls.

2. World T20 Cup. It is hard to get excited about this with Australia playing - or not. On at terrible TV times for us and not always that interesting it must be said. When Will Jacks (England) looks like becoming the player of the tournament, it is all struggling. T20 seems to be the second tier player's realm really. South Africa continue their fine resurgence as a cricket nation.

The semi-finals?

  • New Zealand v South Africa (?) on Thursday 5 March.
  • England v India (?) on Friday 6 March.
Final? - Next Monday 9 March.

3. AFL. Everyone is finished with the preseason (and a bit sick of it!) and looking forward to the comp starting. They need a huge launch as well. I suspect AFL in a new international area/ stadium could be huge!

4. EPL. Man City beat Leeds 1-0, but Arsenal still ahead by two points with 10 games to go. Man City looks the goods. Coach Pep has an incredible record (seven championships). West Ham were hammered by Liverpool 5-2 and Everton continue their great form. Sunderland are locked into the middle of the table and Tottenham-Notts Forest-West Ham and Burnley are chasing survival. Incredible that Tottenham are in this mix. So bad and sacking Ange looks the worst decision of the year.

5. NBL. Best of three finals loom in a fortnight, before a best of five game final series... all into determining the Championship winner. Adelaide 36ers and Sydney Kings are the two top teams waiting for their opponents. The game gap is pretty excessive!

6. A League. Western Sydney Wanderers are cooked. They have lost too often and unless they do a Sydney Kings type recovery, they will be planning for next year. A disaster.

7. Six Nations Rugby. Scotland are resurgent, but France are flying. How quick are they?  Why are the French outside backs and especially their wingers, always two metres quicker than everyone else - today and historically?

Super Rugby... The Reds, Brumbies and Force win. We are good at starting with wins at the season commencement...before fading as it gets colder.

8. The Genesis PGA Tournament. Incredible end last week, but Bridgeman hung on for the win. Min Woo and Scottie Scheffler T12 ($415,000) and Adam Scott fourth ($1M). Great dime if you are talented enough! Noticed Italian Andrea Pavan fell down an elevator shaft when he stepped into a lift and it wasn't there! Does not seem to be an alcohol related matter.

9. Makybe Diva. The great mare passes at age 27 after winning THREE consecutive Melbourne Cups. Likely to never be beaten by any horse - ever. A great of the turf rolls on by. The name was made from the first two letters of the owner's five children.

On Saturday, the mighty Autumn Glow, won its tenth straight race (just)! A new legend is emerging. Just beat Aeliana. Chris Waller has won that race (Verry Elleegant Stakes) twelve consecutive times!
